About that pastured Dexter beef…
Why Dexter beef and not Angus? Why grass-fed and not grain-fed? By choosing Dexter, you’ll be helping keep alive a traditional breed of cow favoring smaller family farms and homesteads. The beef tastes richly unique, scoring higher than Angus on blind taste tests. Cuts are smaller than most other breeds, but denser muscle fiber delivers traditional “beefy” flavor while still satisfying most appetites.
We pride ourselves on producing an environmentally friendlier – as well as healthier – beef by dint of the breed’s smaller stature. Dexter steak makes portion control easier – which is better for the heart – and Dexters are renowned for doing well without grain. Grass and hay (made of grass!) is all our Dexters need to thrive. That means beef produced with less energy – good for us all. It also means a leaner beef.
Catch us at the Olde Towne Portsmouth (Virginia) Farmers Market most Saturday mornings/early afternoons (check Facebook to make sure we’ll be there); see below for our offerings and prices. All our beef, USDA inspected and approved, comes vacuum packaged and frozen in handy portion sizes (such as individual steaks, one-pound ground beef packs, 2-3 lb roasts…). We also do hot food on location – before stocking the freezer, you you might want to try a hamburger or beef-sausage breakfast biscuit to confirm the superior taste of our all-natural, locally-raised, grass-feed, heritage beef!
